5 Benefits of a Vegetarian Diet for Dogs

A plant-based diet offers a wide range of benefits and is suitable for dogs of all shapes, sizes and ages. If your dog is sensitive to certain foods, for example with itchy skin or digestive problems, it may be worth trying a complete vegetarian diet – ideally in consultation with your vet.
Below you will find 5 benefits that a vegetarian diet can offer your dog.

1. Allergy-friendly dog food

According to experts at the Cummings Veterinary Medical Center at Tufts University, the most commonly reported food allergies in dogs are to chicken, beef, dairy and egg products.
What surprises many pet owners is that grain is actually a rare cause of food allergies – most pets react to animal proteins. Food allergies can cause a variety of symptoms in dogs, including skin rashes, dry and itchy skin, loose stools, constipation, flatulence, vomiting, eye discharge or hair loss.

Plant-based recipes do without the most common animal allergens and are therefore a good option for sensitive dogs.

2. Easy-to-digest dog food

Vegetarian recipes are gentle on the digestive system and often free from common allergens. That makes them a good choice for dogs with sensitive stomachs.
